Home Ownership

The application process is currently in open enrollment. Applications are now being taken.

Prospective applicants must call the Habitat for Humanity office to register their interest in the program. The number is (815)726-1880.

We currently build in Lockport Township (the Fairmont community) and the east side of Joliet.

Criteria

Need for adequate housing-- this can make a difference between your family being selected and another family. We are currently building four houses a year and we often have more than four families who qualify. The families with the greatest need are selected first.

  • First preference is for families that live in Will County.

  • Families with the greatest need are those currently living in substandard conditions (overcrowding, roof leaks, furnace/plumbing problems, pest infestations, etc.).

  • Applicants will be given the opportunity to tell Habitat about their own special needs (such as health issues, neighborhood concerns, etc.).

Ability to Pay / Financial Criteria

  • Income Range*-- this is an absolute. The income ranges are set up to ensure that the selected family has a minimum household income that would enable the family to make the monthly payments and maintain the home.

  • No bankruptcy in the last 2 years-- this is an absolute.

  • Applicants must have good credit. If an applicant has a concern about his or her credit, he or she can contact the Will County Center for Community Concerns at (815)722-0722.

Willingness to Partner with Habitat

  • Applicants must be willing to contribute a minimum of 350 sweat equity hours toward the construction of his or her house and other Habitat houses.

  • Selected homeowners can perform this sweat equity, or can enlist help from their family and friends, but the applicant must have completed the 350 hours before they can move in.
